Without power and nothing to do but relax would be the ideal. However, without power and trying to put on dinner theater is entirely different.
From 10 am to about 9:30 pm, my town was without power. The dinner is supposed to start at 6:30 pm. First of setup was a sinch, afterall it was manual labor. And believe it or not prepaering dinner was not a problem either. The event was put on my Wycliffe Dinner Theater (Wycliffe is a missionary organization that develops a written language for those who do not have a written language, plus translate the bible for their language as well)
The perfomance is where we were unsure how things would turn out. We needed electricity for lights and sound. Thankfully, we were able to secure a generator. We knew an electrician, who took ordinary extension cords and cut the ends so they could be connected to the generator. I happen to be out of town in the afternoon and after a phone call I brought back 80 lbs. of ice. Amazingly, we were able to pull everything off with the lack electricity. We even managed to do the dishes. About an hour or so after the show had ended the power was back on. Not long after the stage lights were packed up.
Despite the challenges the show went on and the evening was a success.
